Armed Robbers attack Akwa Ibom government vehicle, cart away millions [PHOTOS]
Daredevil armed bandits on Wednesday, unleashed mayhem on a driver of a Toyota Camry (Spider) Car with Akwa Ibom Government number AK-705-CO1, along Paul Bassey Street by Dominic Utuk Avenue, in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
However, the scene of the operation is just a stone throw to the State’s Area Command of Police and Akwa Ibom State Government House.
An eyewitness account has that, loud bangs of explosives and gunshots which lasted for over fifteen (15) Minutes were heard, few minutes before noon.
The source who identified himself as Obong Bassey said, he thought Boko Haram militants had invaded Uyo when he heard loud bangs of explosives used by the armed-to-the-teeth gunmen.
Hear him: ” I was eating with my son in front of my house (along Paul Bassey) when we heard what first sounded like some fireworks but we dismissed it initially. Later, we heard heavier and more deafening noise that sounded like gunshots and explosives. That was when we realized it was no child’s play. Gunshots and explosives were all over the place and heard from all corners. I couldn’t situate the incident as we ruminated whether it was robbery, Boko Haram’s attack or some kind of war happening.
“We later learnt that the robbers were operating from Paul Bassey, close to Brooks Street (Dominic Utuk Avenue), almost the same place that we normally have Quick Response Squad Police Van stationed.
“The sporadic gunshots and explosives lasted over 15 minutes without any reprisal attack from Police before the dust settled. It was after 30 minutes when the blood-thirsty men of the under world had left using Paul Bassey Street, that some policemen arrived, shouting, “Where them, where them”.

PoliticsNGR learnt that the gunmen, suspected to be armed robbers, pursued and intercepted the vehicle, firing several bullets into the black car.
Although the identity of the driver could not be ascertained, it was learnt that he immediately parked his vehicle and ran into a Presbyterian Church, close to where he abandoned his car. The gunmen were are said to have carted away a huge amount of money from the car.
