Arsenal's £92m Thomas Lemar bid convinces Man City they have landed a bargain
Arsenal’s £92m bid for Thomas Lemar has convinced Manchester City they have secured one of the bargains of the summer in Bernardo Silva.
Etihad hierarchy were stunned to see the figure agreed between Arsenal and Monaco for the French international before the proposed deadline day deal collapsed.
City secured the signing of Bernardo in May - more than a month before the transfer window officially opened.
The £44m deal - coming before Neymar’s world record £200m move from Barcelona to Paris St Germain - has Etihad officials believing they captured the Portuguese international for a fraction of his true worth.
Early moves for Bernardo and goalkeeper Ederson Moraes were part of a strategy to conclude the bulk of their business early on.
Guardiola had been promised a budget of around £300m to bring in as many as seven recruits to overhaul his squad.
Protracted pursuits of Alexis Sanchez and Kylian Mbappe meant City’s business carried on until transfer deadline day - ultimately leaving Guardiola short of the world class striker he coveted and cover in the centre of defence.
Senior figures at the club are adamant they are satisfied with their window - and have addressed all of their priority positions.
But Guardiola’s lingering concern will be an over-reliance on Vincent Kompany’s fitness and a lack of ruthlessness in attack.
The willingness to pay £60m for Sanchez less than 12 months before he becomes a free agent was a measure of just how determined City were to secure the Chilean now.
